I'm 34 and headed back to school this fall. I've got 27 credits so far and hope to finish my sophmore year at the community college and head to the university next fall.

I am having such a hard time choosing a major. Right now I'm trying to decide between a degree in Health Ecology (Public or Community Health) or Social Work. The criteria that are most important to me are a career that is interesting, meaningful, flexibility (available part-time employment), job availability, and job growth (in a field that is growing). Money is great, but it is not one of my deciding factors.

Right now I'm leaning toward a BSW. Especially appealing is the advanced standing offered to get your MSW in only a year. I am also considering minoring in Health Ecology. Just when I think I have made my choice, I start to rethink everything. I think personally I have a little more interest in the Health Ecology degree, however the Social Work degree just seems so flexible and offers so much variety.

I would appreciate hearing anyone's thoughts or opinions on this topic.

See Choosing a Major on this Website. It contains a lot of helpful advice and direction, as does the Career Planning section.

Best regards,
